The CSFSF design was developed by JSC KIEP in cooperation with Holtec International (USA). The design deploys the use of containers for storage of spent nuclear fuel. This is a nationwide significant project being implemented to solve the problem of interim storage of spent nuclear fuel from the Ukrainian NPPs with the reactors VVER-440 and VVER-1000. The CSFSF is a modern storage facility for spent nuclear fuel, which employs the dry storage technology.
The special containers designed by Holtec International (USA) have a two-barrier system for isolation of fuel assemblies from the environment and provide for a complete resistance to any extreme natural and man-induced impacts including an aircraft crash. The CSFSF is designed to accommodate 458 containers enabling for placement of 36 fuel assemblies each. The period of spent fuel storage is 100 years. The CSFSF is located in the Exclusion zone of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.
