Completion of Khmelnytska NPP Units 3 and 4

One of the main directions of the future activities at Khmelnytska NPP (KhNPP) is completion of power units 3 and 4. Currently, Khmelnitsky NPP operates two power units with a nominal capacity of 1000 MW each, that fully meet up-to-date safety requirements. Compliance with international safety standards has been confirmed by the experts of the IAEA and the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO).

JSC “Kiev Research and Design Institute “Energoproject” (JSC KIEP) has provided engineering support for KhNPP operation, performs the works for upgrading the power plant systems and equipment, implements the safety improvement programs as well as develops periodic safety assessment reports for the power units.

At the end of July 2018, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine approved the Feasibility Study developed by JSC KIEP for completion of two KhNPP power units at a cost of 72.4 billion UAH. According to the Feasibility Study, the installed capacity of the two power units will be 2094 MW. According to the estimates made by the SE NNEGC “Energoatom” the completion of KhNPP power units 3 and 4 will provide for additional generation of power amounting to 15 billion kWh per year to be delivered to the Unified Power System of Ukraine.

The Government of Ukraine plans to complete and commission two power units at Khmelnytska NPP as part of the Ukraine–EU Energy Bridge Project that assumes increase in power at Ukrainian NPPs, disconnection of KhNPP power unit 2 from the Ukrainian power system and export of the generated power to Poland and Hungary The export contract shall be the key to obtaining the credit resources for completion of power units 3 and 4 at Khmelnytska NPP.

JSC KIEP authorized by the SE NNEGC “Energoatom” is carrying out the survey of existing structures at KhNPP units 3 and 4 in order to confirm their life time and reliability.
